Need to know a standard king size mattress size? The correct information you need will depend on what country the mattress is made for. A king size mattress made for the UK market may differ in size when compared to one made for a different country.
Although most manufacturers in the UK and Ireland tend to abide by a standardised king bed size, there are no set dimensions.
This means that the size can differ between manufacturers. Also, manufacturers are legally allowed a tolerance of +/- 2cm of the quoted mattress size.
In the UK and Ireland, a king size mattress usually measures 150 cm x 200 cm. However, this can vary slightly.
Many countries in Europe have different dimensions for their beds and mattresses. So, let’s look at a few examples of standard measurements for king size mattresses in countries around Europe.
Portugal’s mattresses are all typically 190 cm in length. However, mattresses with a 200 cm length are becoming more frequent throughout the country. A king size mattress in Portugal tends to measure 180 cm x 190 cm.
Switzerland, shares similar king size bed dimensions to Portugal, with the standard size being 180 cm x 190 cm.
Italy classifies their mattress sizes through the term “piazza” (one place). A king size mattress in Italy is referred to as “Due Piazze” or “letto matrimoniale” (matrimonial bed) these also tend to measure 180 cm x 190 cm.
A king size bed in France usually measures 190 cm x 200 cm.
The Americans use the imperial measuring system as standard and are only one of three countries in the world to do so. This means that their typical mattress sizes are defined in inches as opposed to centimetres.
There are many bed sizes in America some common and some less common. Some sizes you may never have heard of before include - an Antique Double Three-Quarter, Wyoming King, Olympic Queen and Junior sizes.
As for a standard king size mattress in America, this tends to measure 76 inches x 79.5 inches (193 cm x 202 cm).
Here are a few more common sizes for king size mattresses around the world.
Australia - 183 cm x 203 cm.
New Zealand - 165 cm x 203 cm.
South Africa - 183 cm x 188 cm or 183 cm x 200 cm.
India - 183 cm x 198 cm.
Indonesia - 180 cm x 200 cm.

]]>Need to know the size of a double mattress? Depending on what country you live in the answer to that question may differ.
There are no set sizes for double mattresses across the world and many different countries have their own unique dimensions. Today we’re going to look at some common sizes for double beds across the globe.
Our double memory foam mattresses are made to standard UK and Ireland measurements (135 cm x 190 cm). Below you’ll find our full collection including our Best Memory Foam Mattress.
As for the standard size of a double mattress in the United Kingdom, this tends to measure 53 inches x 74 inches (135 cm x 190 cm).
Be aware, that this measurement is not entirely standardised for double mattresses. The size of a double mattress may vary ever so slightly between manufacturers.
This is because, in the UK and Ireland, manufacturers are permitted a tolerance of +/- 2 cm of the measurements that are stated.
Overall though, this won’t affect the functionality of your double mattress with your bed frame. If you’re unsure about a mattress size, it’s always best to ask the manufacturer to clarify what it is.
Double bed sizes can vary between European countries. We’ll outline a few common double sizes used in a selection of countries throughout Europe.
France uses a variety of double bed sizes. Some of the most common sizes are 140 cm x 190 cm, 160 cm x 200 cm and 180 cm x 200 cm.
Italy, on the other hand, refers to double beds as square beds. They classify their bed sizes by using the term “Piazza” (one place). A single mattress is one place, whereas a double mattress is one and a half places. The standard size for a double mattress in Italy is 120 cm x 190 cm or 120 cm x 200 cm.
Meanwhile, the most common double bed size for countries in Northern Europe such as Poland, Germany, Netherlands and Sweden is 180 cm x 200 cm. There may be some slight variations between Northern European countries, however, this is the most standard measurement.
In Spain, double beds are referred to as “cama de matrimonio” (marital bed). The most common size for a double mattress (or marital mattress) in Spain is 135 cm x 190 cm.
Because America uses the imperial measurement system, double mattress sizes are defined in inches instead of centimetres.
As of 2019, the United States is one of three countries that are yet to adopt the metric system; with the other two countries being Liberia and Myanmar.
A standard double mattress size in America measures 53.5 x 74.5 inches (136 cm x 189 cm).
Although Australia uses the metric system, they share similar dimensions to North America in regard to the size of a double mattress. Australia’s double beds measure 136 cm x 189 cm.
Over in Asia, the size of a double mattress also differs. China for example, categorise their beds by width. Whilst the length is often 200 cm, the width for a double mattress can vary. Some of the most common sizes include: 120 cm x 200 cm, 150 cm x 200 cm & 180 cm x 200 cm.
The length of a mattress in Indonesia is always 200 cm. A standard double bed there tends to measure 120 cm x 200 cm.
Japan has a variety of double bed sizes including - Semi-Double, Double and Wide Double. A semi-double bed measures 122 cm x 195 cm, a double bed is 140 cm x 190 cm and finally, a wide double is 152 cm x 195 cm.
]]>Have you recently bought or are you think about buying a new mattress? If the answer is “Yes” to either, you’ll soon need to consider disposing of your old mattress.
Mattress disposal can feel like a complicated ordeal. If you’re wondering how to dispose of a mattress for free, we’re here to help you.
It’s often recommended that a mattress should be replaced every 7 -10 years. The actual amount of time your mattress can last, however, can vary quite drastically. The truth is that your mattress needs replacing when you believe it needs replacing. If you’re not sleeping as well as you once did, it may be time for an upgrade.
If you haven’t bought a new mattress yet, be sure to check out our full range. Our memory foam mattress range has been carefully crafted to suit the preferences of all our customers. Each is available in sizes ranging from Single to Super King. You’re sure to find the perfect mattress here!
Although getting rid of your old mattress may seem tricky, there are often many different options to choose from. Some of these options are free while others may cost you.
When you’re looking to get rid of your old mattress, it’s worth checking if the retailer you originally bought it from, will dispose of it for you.
The company delivering your replacement might also offer a mattress collection service. Whether or not that will be free will depend entirely on the company, though. Some may offer it as a free incentive, whereas others will charge a fee.
You can also take your mattress to be recycled. This is much more environmentally friendly than letting it go to landfill. Check to see if your local recycling depot recycles mattresses. If you can take it there yourself, this can be done free of charge. Otherwise, your local council may charge you a fee to collect it.
The foam in mattresses can be easily recycled. It can be baled and sent off to help generate energy or it can be repurposed as industrial carpet underlay.
Another free method of mattress disposal is simply to give it away. Depending on the condition of your mattress, it may suitable for use by somebody in need.
Alternatively, you could opt to sell it and make a little money back on your initial purchase. Naturally, this will largely depend on the condition of your old mattress.
If you can avoid sending your mattress to landfill, try to do so. If you have the option to recycle it instead, you’ll be doing your part by not contributing to the worsening state of landfills in the UK.
Also, don’t dump your mattress. By this, we mean fly-tipping. Not only is it a nuisance, but it’s also illegal and could see you hit with a hefty fine.
Finally, we recommend you don’t burn your mattress.; even if it is cold this Winter. While there are no laws against bonfires in England and Wales, setting fire to a mattress can be dangerous. The fumes they give off may also be bad for your health and the environment.
]]>Music can be composed to resonate with any emotion. From gloom to glee - some of it has the incredible ability to completely change the way we feel in an instant.
Sleep music has long fascinated me. The idea that sounds can have more than just a mental effect on a person is quite astounding.
But what really is sleep music, how does it work and why does it affect people in different ways? I’ve been eager to find out and I’m guessing you are as well.
Sleep music is not necessarily composed with the intention of sending the listener to sleep. Come to think of it, wouldn’t that be a musician’s worst nightmare? Imagine selling out a concert hall, playing some new material and finding that half the audience has drifted off!
With that said, music made to induce a sense of relaxation has been around for a long time. It’s believed that Celtic, Native American and Indian stringed instruments are particularly effective at helping people to relax.
It’s believed that music of around 60 bpm is the most effective at causing alpha brainwaves. Alpha brainwaves are frequencies from 8 - 14 cycles per second. These are the waves we produce when awake and relaxed.
So, how when does sleep music induce sleep? We produce what is called delta brainwaves when asleep. Delta brainwaves are a frequency of 5 cycles per second. In order to bring these about, it is thought that a person can spend around 45 minutes listening to sleep music, whilst in a relaxed position.
The effect on our brains whilst listening to sleep music is believed to be as effective as certain prescribed medications.
Everybody is unique and one of many things that makes us so is our likes and dislikes.
I personally enjoy the smell of petrol. However, I’m willing to bet that there are many people who find that same odour repulsive.
Similarly, I despise the taste of celery. Yet, I’ve often found people argue that celery is virtually tasteless.
Thank goodness we’re not all carbon copies of one another. If that were the case, this existence of ours would be very mundane.
Our likes and dislikes also extend to the sounds we prefer. This is clear by the various tastes in music that people have.
We’ve spoken about sleep music, but what about sleep sounds? You may find it strange, but I find the sound of a vacuum cleaner very soothing. The same applies to hairdryers and electric fans. In fact, I used to with an electric fan on most nights regardless of the room temperature. Without that sound, I seriously struggled to sleep.
While some people prefer complete silence, many prefer listening to a variety of unique sounds as they sleep. A few examples include -
And that’s just the beginning. Sleep sounds are surprisingly popular and there’s plenty of choices. Just take a look at how many reviews this app on the Google Play Store has.
Although a nice piece of music can make me drift off, I’ve always preferred sleep sounds over sleep music. We’ve already looked at the science behind sleep music, but why do we enjoy certain sounds?
The fact that the sound of a vacuum cleaner makes me sleepy once came up in conversion between my mother and I. Oddly enough, she told me that as a baby, when I was particularly restless, the sound of the vacuum cleaner would soothe me. It was even an effective trick to get me to calm down when the usual methods failed.
Considering this, I’m led to believe that the reason we enjoy some sounds can be rooted in our childhood experiences.
The same principle applies to certain smells we enjoy. Many of us have a smell that immediately invokes a sense of nostalgia. Just one whiff and we’re immediately transported back to our childhoods. It could be the smell of Play-Doh or the aroma of pine from a real Christmas tree.
To go deeper into this, it has been suggested that white noise (created by the likes of vacuum cleaners and hair dryers) can be compared to the sounds we heard whilst in our mothers’ wombs. White noise has proven in tests to be a useful tool in settling difficult babies. It would have been noisy throughout the earliest periods of sleep we ever had which may be why some people find white noise aids in their sleep.
Aside from intrauterine experiences, another reason people enjoy sounds such as white noise may be due to the sound masking effects. Introducing certain sounds can help to mask unwanted noise pollution. This can be effective whether asleep or awake. Sound masking is something that is often considered and implemented in public areas and private office buildings.
Whether you enjoy sleep music or not, nobody can deny the benefits of a good quality memory foam mattress. If your current mattress has seen better days, why not upgrade it? We stock a variety of expertly designed mattresses to help improve your sleep. Take a look at our cosy memory foam mattress range.
]]>It’s perhaps not the most pressing question in need of answers, but here we are. How long do snails sleep?
Stop pondering your own existence for a second or wondering whether life exists beyond earth. Right now, we’re going to learn about the sleep cycles of gastropods.
Some are very big, some are very small. Some people despise them and some love to eat them. When you think about it, snails really are quite diverse creatures. And the same principle applies to their sleeping habits.
If you’ve already searched the question - “how long do snails sleep?” you may have discovered that the answer is said to be 3 years. Sadly, that’s inaccurate. To make such a statement is barely half an answer.
We’ve already addressed that many different types of snails exist. From the common Garden Snail to the Giant African Land Snail. Sleeping habits can differ drastically according to factors such as species and environment.
Like many other creatures, some snails hibernate through the winter months. They can also estivate during particularly warm and dry seasons.
Hibernation and estivation are not the same as sleeping. While creatures do remain dormant during these states, their bodies are also going through extreme physiological changes.
Sleep predominantly alters psychological aspects. Hibernation and estivation, however, are more focused on physical alterations such as the change of body temperature.
So, how long do snails sleep for? Technically it’s not 3 years. They can in some cases hibernate for up to 3 years and this is where the misconception arises.
The average sleep cycle of a snail isn’t too astounding. Snails will sleep on and off for several hours at a time. Once they’ve rested though, they can stay awake for around 30 hours. You may even know a few people with similar sleeping patterns.
Snails don’t tend to pay attention to the day and night cycles. Instead, they’ll sleep as and when they feel the need to.
It’s quite a funny story actually. You’re likely familiar with Google and may know of their endeavours to continuously improve upon user experience.
Nowadays, when you type a question into Google it’s a lot more likely that you’ll be presented with an immediate answer. These answers tend to be siphoned out from higher ranking content for the search term in question.
Anyway, a Redditor by the name of “Unidan_nadinU” must have one day wondered about the question we’ve been tackling today. They typed into Google “How long do Snails Sleep” only to be presented with the incredibly accurate answer of… three. No unit of measurement to compare to just “three”.
This individual then took to Reddit to share a screenshot in a post titled “Units of measurement are for suckers”. The post garnered a lot of attention and multiple memes based on the original post also began to surface.
So, there we have it! We’ve not only provided you with an answer to the question of how long snails sleep. We’ve even gone as far as to let you know why people even cared in the first place.
]]>There are plenty of reasons why you may be sleeping so much. These can be physical, psychological or related to your lifestyle.
Everybody’s different. Some people would jump at the chance to sleep in all day. Others have trouble switching off and can feel the urge to be up and ready early in the morning.
We love to sleep here at Lion Mattresses, but also understand that too much or too little can be problematic. Let’s take a look at some reasons for why you may be oversleeping or feeling tired.
The things you do in your day to day life can have a drastic effect on your sleeping pattern. If you find that you’re always feeling tired, you may want to analyse your daily routine.
Let’s say for example that you work night shifts. Changing work patterns alone can be enough to ruin your sleep schedule.
Maybe you rely on a few cups of coffee or energy drinks to keep you alert through the long nights? Caffeine is a stimulant. Too much of it can wreak havoc on your sleep, leaving you feeling exhausted in the long run. Remember, there’s no substitute for sleep and all that caffeine will catch up with you eventually.
Exercise is also a contributing factor. We all know that exercising is good for you. It helps to keep your mind and body healthy. Not getting enough exercise can leave you feeling tired and lethargic. With that said, too much exercise can result in a similar outcome, so know your limits.
What you eat and drink also plays a role in how well you sleep. Too many fatty snacks, sugary foods and too much alcohol will affect the quality of your sleep, leaving you feeling more tired than usual.
A person’s state of mind is one of the most common reasons for tiredness and poor-quality sleep. The human mind is a fascinating subject and there’s still so much we’re yet to understand about it.
Psychological effects can lead to insomnia, meaning you struggle to sleep. Other effects can also render you with urges to sleep much more than usual.
A person who is struggling to sleep may be suffering from stress, anxiety or have experienced emotional trauma.
On the other hand, a person who is depressed may sleep more than usual. Anxiety can also leave an individual feeling tired and wanting to sleep.
If you haven’t already, you should speak to your GP if you feel that you’re experiencing any of the aforementioned. They will be able to advise appropriate treatments which could lead to you feeling better and sleeping better.
There are many physical causes of tiredness. Some of these can be related to health conditions such as sleep apnoea, anaemia or an underactive thyroid.
Your weight can also influence how tired you’re feeling. An overweight person’s body needs to work harder throughout the day. This means that they’ll use more energy which could leave them feeling tired. On the opposite side, an underweight person is likely to have poor muscle strength. This will lead the body to tire quicker than usual.
A pregnant woman is also likely to feel more tired and sleep more than usual. A body goes through substantial changes during pregnancy, especially in the first 12 weeks. This creates a greater demand for energy use, which is likely to leave a pregnant woman feeling tired.
Another reason for tiredness could be linked to any medication you’ve been prescribed. Reading the side effects of your medication will inform you whether they can cause drowsiness.
The reason for your tiredness could also be related to how comfortable you are. If you're feeling uncomfortable at night, why not upgrade your mattress? We stock a wide range of memory foam mattresses all designed to help you sleep better at night.
If you’re concerned about tiredness or your reasons for oversleeping, you should always visit your GP. This is the best means to diagnose your reason for feeling tired and/or oversleeping.
]]>Now we’ve entered Summer, there’s a good chance you’re considering or are preparing to go away on holiday. Where will you be visiting this year? France, Spain? Perhaps further afield. Whether you’re planning on sunning it up in Corfu or backpacking around Nepal, you first have to travel there.
If you’re reading this, you’re likely either planning to journey on a plane or you’re booked and ready to go. Short flights may not require you to rest, however, with longer journeys you may be wondering how to sleep on a plane. Here are some suggestions to help you sleep better on a plane the next time you jet off.
Some people can sleep anywhere, bundle them into the back of a car, wedged between two others and they’ll still not be troubled. Others though, don’t find it so easy to doze off.
We love sleep here at Lion Mattresses and understand that creating the perfect environment for rest is integral for great rest.
Different people prefer different things when it comes to creating the perfect environment for rest. Some people like to sleep in pitch black for example, others prefer a little light. Some find certain noises help them to sleep, while others would rather absolute silence.
When working out how to sleep on a plane, it’s important that you fully understand what works best for you. That way you can take some steps to create a better sleeping environment while you’re in the air.
There are 3 main things that are likely to affect your ability to sleep on a plane. These are comfort, noise and lighting. Paying close attention to each of these is the key to getting better sleep on a plane.
If you’re the sort of person who prefers minimal noise while sleeping, it’s a good idea to bring some earplugs with you. These will help to drown out noises caused by the plane as well as other people inside it. Alternatively, if you prefer certain noises whilst you sleep, bring a device which will allow you to listen to them. Things such as soothing music and even white noise could be what you’re looking for.
If you don’t like too much light around you when you sleep, we suggest bringing a sleep mask. This will help to block out any light which could potentially interfere with you getting a good amount of rest. Alternatively, if you prefer a little more lighting while you sleep, most planes come fitted with a small reading light for each seat.
Sometimes it can be hard to get comfortable in a plane seat. Small amounts of leg room and extended periods of sitting can be hard going.
On the topic of leg room, did you know that you’ll get more if you are seated by an emergency exit? Regulations state that a passenger must be placed by the centre emergency exits on all flights. If the plane you are on isn’t particularly crowded, you be asked to move seats in order to fill one of these spaces. Why not volunteer yourself for the job to increase your chances of getting more leg room on a flight?
A neck pillow is also a good way to improve comfort while you sleep on a plane. This will provide you a cushioned surface to rest your head during the flight. Neck pillows can be inflatable or filled with a cushioning material such as foam. Inflatable ones will likely be less comfortable but will take up less room when deflated. You’ll need to decide which works better for you.
]]>Sleep is a vital part of your daily routine. Without it, your body and mind will not function properly. Getting too little sleep can imapct concentration, judgement and leave your body feeling exhausted. But have you ever wondered - how long can you go without sleep? Let’s find out!
There are many reasons why we need to sleep. One of the foremost is to benefit our minds.
Your brain processes a considerable amount of information daily. To properly consolidate and turn that information into strong memories, we require sleep.
If you consider your brain as a computer, this process can be likened to saving a piece of work. While we sleep, much of the information your brain has acquired throughout the day moves from weaker short-term memory to more solidified long-term memory.
With this in mind, we can summarise that sleep helps to expand your long-term memory. Getting a good amount of sleep will help you to remember more information and optimise the performance of your brain.
Did you know that Albert Einstein reportedly slept for at least 10 hours a day? The average person is thought to sleep only around 6 and a half hours a day. This is a pretty good endorsement to sleep longer, don’t you think?
It’s not just your brain which benefits from sleep either. Your body requires sleep for tissue repair, muscle growth, hormone synthesis and to rejuvenate. If you’ve ever had a bad night’s sleep, you’re sure to feel the effects the next day.
In 1964, Randy Gardener set the world record for the longest a human has gone without sleep. Randy stayed awake for an incredible 11 days and 25 minutes (264.4 hours). The previous record was held by Tom Rounds from Honolulu who stayed awake for 260 hours.
There isn’t a set amount of time that a person can go without sleep, but these men certainly pushed themselves to the brink to find out.
Whilst no record exists of a human being dying directly from sleep deprivation, there is evidence to suggest that it can cause harmful effects. On the topic of sleep deprivation, the NHS states -
“Regular poor sleep puts you at risk of serious medical conditions, including obesity, heart disease and diabetes - and it shortens your life expectancy”.
Sleeping well comes with a ton of benefits, so it’s a good idea to get as much as you need whenever you can. Here are just a few benefits that come from sleeping well -
It really is incredible how many positive effects can come from simply sleeping well. So, remember this the next time you think about pulling an all-nighter. Of course, if you usually don’t get enough sleep, you may struggle to remember any of this a few days or weeks from now.
Owning a good-quality mattress can do wonders for the quality of your sleep. With a comfy memory foam mattress underneath you, you’re more likely to experience longer periods of deep sleep.
If you’re tired of your current mattress, why not upgrade to the best? Our Best Memory Foam Mattress can help you get a great night’s sleep, every night of the week!
]]>As many as 34% of British adults sleep with a soft toy. That’s the findings of a recent survey conducted by Hotpoint.
Hotpoint spoke to 2,000 people and discovered that 44% of those interviewed had held onto to their treasured childhood toy.
17% admitted to cuddling said toy when they felt down and almost 1 in 10 people professed that they preferred to share a bed with their stuffed toy than a partner.
Who can blame them right? Teddy can’t accidentally kick you square in the back and he never gets morning breath.
The survey also discovered that approximately 40% had a bedroom at their parents home filled with old toys.
5% had even requested that it be kept exactly as it was from when they were a child. That must pack a serious nostalgia kick.
The survey indicated that around 11% of adults in Britain have taken a soft toy on holiday with them at least once.
5% had even sneaked it into their workplace. Perhaps they hide it in a filing cabinet ready for covert hugs at lunch?
Would you be devastated if your special soft toy suddenly went missing or got destroyed?
Well according to the survey findings, you’re more likely to be heartbroken if you’re a man.
In fact, 21% of men said that they would feel devastated if they lost their nearest and dearest fibre stuffed friend.
Similarly, only 19% of women admitted to the same.
We don’t think so. Sure, some might find it a little unconventional, but what’s it to them anyway? Do what makes you happy.
And if you find said happiness in a bundle of fluff and stitches then cuddle to your heart's content friends.
And besides, cuddling your favourite soft toy at night could be doing wonders for your sleep!
We all know that getting more sleep makes us happy, but did you know that being happy when you go to bed counts towards positive sleep?
A study published in the journal Annals of Behavioural Medicine indicated that there is a direct correlation between a positive life outlook and the quality of your sleep.
We love great quality sleep at Lion Mattresses, perhaps we’ll invest in some soft toy lions to keep us company at night.
Aside from sharing a bed with your favourite plush toy, there’s something else you can do to get better quality sleep.
We’ve designed a range of memory foam mattresses perfect for a great night’s sleep. There’s something for everybody. Whether you’ve got a budget to work to or simply want the best of the best.
]]>Well, a new study made by researchers at the University of South Florida suggests otherwise. Getting just 16 minutes less sleep at night could majorly impact your performance during the next working day.
130 employees working in the I.T. sector volunteered to have their sleeping patterns and work performance tracked. And the results may surprise you...
Those who reported having slept just 16 minutes less than usual experienced severe impacts within their working performance. Issues properly focusing, and processing information made these individuals more stressed and less productive.
It was also discovered that those who received less sleep were more likely to make poor judgments. They also found themselves much more easily distracted!
Soomi Lee, lead author stated:
‘Good sleepers may be better performers at work due to greater ability to stay focused an on-task with fewer errors and interpersonal conflicts.’
‘Findings from this study provide empirical evidence for why workplaces need to make more efforts to promote their employees’ sleep.’
In 2016, an investigation held by Rand Europe discovered that the UK economy loses £40billion per year. This is because of the physical and mental effects caused by employee sleep deprivation.
A study conducted by the University of Rotterdam in 2017 supports this. The study showed that just one poor night’s sleep can lead to disagreeable employee behaviour. Including short tempers and taking longer breaks throughout the day.
But what can be done to fix this? Employers can’t exactly monitor their employees' sleep behaviour.
What they can do though is promote more positive working environments. Ones that are less stressful, more positive and ultimately healthier.
There’s no questioning the importance of a great night’s sleep! The next time you plan to stay up a little bit later, ask yourself. Is it worth it?
If only 16 minutes can have such a severe impact on your working performance, maybe the next episode of your TV show can wait.
Sleeping well isn’t always so simple. But, there are things you can do to help improve your sleep quality.
You should always start with a good quality mattress. A comfortable mattress counts towards great rest.

]]>If you’re wondering what the standard size for a single mattress is, the answer will largely depend on the country you are in.
You may be surprised to learn that not all single mattresses share a standardised measurement system.
Therefore, it’s especially important to understand the measurements of your mattress before making a purchase.
If your single mattress is too big or too small for the bed frame you own, it is likely to cause complications.
In the United Kingdom, the standard size of a single mattress is 35 inches x 74 inches (90 cm x 190 cm).
However, this is not an entirely standardised measurement and the size of a single mattress may vary slightly between manufacturers.
This is because legally, manufacturers in the UK and Ireland can create mattresses with a tolerance of up to +/- 2 cm of what they are quoted to measure.
90 cm x 190 cm is the standard single mattress size as stated by the National Bed Federation.
Just like the United Kingdom and Ireland, many countries in Europe have their own standard single mattress size which varies slightly between regions.
Northern European countries such as the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Latvia, Denmark and more have varying sizes of single mattresses.
For example, in some regions of Germany, a common standard single mattress measures 100 cm x 200 cm, whereas Norway measures 75 cm x 200 cm.
Meanwhile, single mattresses in France are usually 190 cm long and 90 cm wide.
A single mattress in Italy ranges from 80 cm to 90 cm in width and has a length of 190 cm.
Switzerland’s single mattresses are slightly longer - They measure 200 cm in length, whereas the width can vary massively from 70 cm all the way up to 140 cm!
The measurements of Single or Twin mattresses in North America are generally defined in inches. The standard size of these mattresses is 39” x 74” (99 cm x 188 cm).
Single and Twin mattresses are mostly the same. The clear difference is that Twin mattresses come as a pair and are generally used in rooms shared by more than one person, such as by siblings.
Across the world, single mattresses vary slightly in length and width according to the country they are sold in.
Here a few more examples of approximate standard single mattress sizes according to the country they are sold in.
A question we see quite often is - how long does a mattress last? This is a very reasonable question. Knowing how long a product can last will ultimately become a deciding factor in whether you decide to buy it. Unfortunately, it is a question which doesn’t appear to have a clear answer.
It’s often said that a person should replace their mattress every 7-10 years. This is a very sweeping statement. In actuality, the lifespan of a mattress can vary quite considerably. How long a mattress lasts can depend on numerous factors. These include how often a mattress is used, how well it is cared for and most importantly the quality of the actual mattress.
It’s unnecessary to replace your mattress simply because it is more than 7 or even 10 years old. Some mattresses are very much suitable for use after these many years. Contrarily, some mattresses may need to be replaced much before the “7-10” year deadline.
Ultimately it is you that should be the one to decide when it is time to replace your mattress. After all, you are the one sleeping on it, thus making you the best judge on when it is time to change. With that said, there are some things which you can look out for which can help you to decide.
If you constantly find yourself tossing and turning at night on your mattress, this could be a sign that your old mattress isn’t allowing you to relax. Moreover, if you’re able to see visible signs of sagging (such as permanent dips or unevenness) then it’s time to get a replacement.
Some mattresses also attract allergens. If you’re seeing a spike in your allergies this could be a sign that your mattress is getting old. Thankfully, all mattresses from Lion Mattresses are hypoallergenic, so this shouldn’t be an issue.
The two most common types of mattresses are spring and memory foam mattresses. You likely own either of these or else, a hybrid form of the two.
On average, a memory foam mattress will last you longer than a spring mattress will. This really boils down to the fact that a spring mattress is structurally more complex than a memory foam mattress is. You may have heard people say that the more parts an item contains, the more likely it is to break. Logically this makes sense and is certainly something which can apply to mattresses.
Due to the coil system design, a spring-based mattress is likely to eventually sag through consistent pressure from body weight. Because of this, spring mattresses often have shorter warranties when compared to memory foam mattresses.
Memory foam has a good level of elasticity. This allows it to quickly return to its original shape once pressure is relieved. As a result, a memory foam mattress will on average last longer than other mattress types. Memory foam contours to your body when you lay on it, thus providing additional levels of support and comfort.
Thinking that it’s time to replace your mattress? Upgrade to a luxury memory foam mattress today! We have a wide selection of memory foam mattresses to choose from. From our Simple to our Best Memory Foam Mattress, you’re certain to find a great night’s sleep here.
]]>Everything can do with a clean now again, some more often than others. Chances are you’ve never or don’t often clean your memory foam mattress. And why would you? It’s not the sort of thing you can put in a washing machine and hosing it down won’t do it much good. So how do you clean a memory foam mattress? We’re going to tell you how.
The great thing about memory foam is that it is inherently antimicrobial. Whilst no mattress can claim to be entirely free from microorganisms, memory foam mattresses are known to be much more hygienic than other mattress types. Memory foam is much more likely to inhibit the growth of mould, fungus and other nasty stuff which would make your mattress generally unpleasant to sleep on. With that said, it’s still a good idea to clean a memory foam mattress every so often.
There’re only a few things you need to clean a memory foam mattress. You’ll need some baking soda, a vacuum cleaner, warm soapy water, a sponge and white vinegar (optional). Bear in mind that this method is good for general cleaning to help maintain a fresh and more hygienic mattress. A heavily stained or soiled mattress will not benefit from this. If your mattress is like this, it may be necessary to replace it instead.
Firstly, remove the cover from your memory foam mattress. If you own a mattress from Lion Mattresses, you can easily unzip the breathable sleep surface cover. This cover is machine washable, so you may want to launder it at the same time.
Once you have removed your memory foam, sprinkle baking soda over it. This helps to eliminate odours and absorbs any moisture which may be in the foam. Once this is done, leave the baking soda to settle for approximately ten minutes. Once ten minutes is up, use your vacuum cleaner to vacuum the baking soda off the memory foam.
Once the baking soda is gone, take your warm soapy water and sponge. Here you want to only spot clean the memory foam mattress. Pick out key areas and gently apply the soapy water using your sponge. If you have a memory foam mattress with a particularly strong odour, adding some white vinegar to the water can help with this.
Once you have finished spot cleaning your mattress, you can use some paper towels or a hand towel to dry up any excess moisture. Press down on the towels to better help absorb the moisture and leave them to sit overnight. Leaving the towels to sit overnight should also allow time for your memory foam mattress cover to dry.
It is advisable to leave your mattress to dry overnight, however, you of course, will need a mattress to sleep on. If you have an alternative place to sleep that night, this won’t be an issue. If not, try to clean the memory foam mattress as early as possible. This will allow more time for your mattress to dry. Do not replace the covers until you are happy that the memory foam in your mattress is dry.
And that’s it! Enjoy sleeping on your freshly cleaned memory foam mattress!
]]>Did you know that the foetal position is the world’s most popular sleeping position? It makes sense, after all, it’s the very first position that we began life sleeping in. Being such a popular position, we decided to look at our range and decide which is the best mattress for side sleepers.
There are a few different positions one can be in when sleeping on their side. As we now know the foetal position is the most popular. This position involves laying on your side whilst bringing your elbows and knees towards your core. This mimics the same position as an unborn baby. It is said that we humans are creatures of habit. What better way to sleep than in the very position we all first tried?
The yearner position, whilst less popular than the previous is another side sleeping position that many of us use. Approximately 13% of people sleep like this. The yearner involves sleeping with your arms out in front of you, so unless you have a big mattress, this may not be the best for bed sharers.
Finally, we have the log position. You’ve likely heard the expression to “sleep like a log” however, this position is actually amongst the most unpopular ways to sleep; only 6% of people sleep this way. This is a relatively rigid position, but if you want to sleep like a log point your arms downwards as you drift off.
If you want to learn more about sleeping positions, take a look at our blog post - Sleeping Positions and Their Health Effects.
We’ve developed a range of different mattresses all suited for different sleeping preferences. Some of us prefer a firmer feeling mattress, whilst others like to doze off on something softer. Whatever your preference, a memory foam mattress is the best mattress for side sleepers.
Memory foam is a thermally reactive material. This means that it can react to your body temperature and mould to your unique shape. Unlike spring filled mattresses where your body forces against the mattress, a memory foam mattress cradles you whilst you sleep. Once you get up, the memory foam quickly returns to its original shape; it really is a fantastic material!
We have four different mattress models to choose from all available in a variety of sizes. Whether you’re working to a tight budget or are searching for the very best in mattress technology, we can help! All of our mattresses contain premium virgin memory foam and come fitted with a CoolMax temperature reactive cover as standard.
Our Simple Memory Foam Mattress starts at under £100. It’s perfect for anybody searching for a quality mattress without an off-putting price tag. It’s worth noting that all of our mattresses are made within our UK based Factory by the Lion Mattresses team. When you buy a mattress from us, you’re buying straight from the manufacturer. This allows us to offer some of the most competitive prices across our entire range.
The Classic Lion Mattress is our mid-range memory foam mattress and the very first model we developed. A 50kg/m3 premium memory foam layer sits atop a support layer of 30kg/m3 high-density foam. It also features a teardrop air flow cut which helps to promote breathability in the material. If you prefer a firmer feeling mattress, be sure to check out our Classic Ortho Memory Foam Mattress.
Finally, we have our Best Memory Foam Mattress and it really is our best mattress for side sleepers. We’ve integrated the same technology we use to create medical mattresses for NHS and private healthcare organisations into this model. Featuring a patented two-way cut for enhanced pressure relief, this mattress helps to promote healthy circulation and posture. ]]>Everybody has their own preferred way to sleep, some people can only get a good night’s rest on their back, whilst others simply have to sleep on their side. But did you know that different sleeping positions can affect your health in various ways? Some of these effects are positive, whilst others can be negative. Take a look at our list below, featuring a range of popular sleeping positions and the way in which they can affect your health.
Our first sleeping position is the aptly named freefall. This position consists of an individual laying on their stomach with their arms raised above their head. This is similar to the way in which your body would look whilst freefalling (only without the flappy face), hence the name. The great thing about laying in this position is that it’s great for digestion. So if you find that you’re regularly experiencing digestive problems, why not give this sleeping position a try?
The Fetus is a position that we’ve all slept in at one point in our lives. This is because it’s the position we naturally make whilst in the womb. Curled up onto your side, this position is one of the most common and is used by approximately 41% of the world’s population. Did you know though, that this sleeping position actually can put a lot of stress on your vital organs? Your lungs, liver, and stomach are all put under stress when sleeping like this. If this is your sleeping position of choice, try laying on your right side as it causes much less stress on your organs.
Ever slept like log? How about literally? The log is a position made by an individual sleeping on their side, whilst keeping their body straight, with both arms facing down. This is a great sleeping position for those who regularly experience back problems. Sleeping in this position helps to keep your spine straight, which is a good thing if you want to avoid back pain.
If you suffer from acid reflux, give this position a try. The yearner takes the form of an individual sleeping on their side with both arms stretched out to the side. This position is said to alleviate the effects of acid reflux, which can be a bothersome and sometimes painful complaint. It’s also known to lessen the symptoms of sleep apnoea, another common complaint.
This is a common sleeping position, that actually has a lot of negative health effects linked to it. The Soldier, sees an individual laying on their back, with their arms by their side. This may be comfortable for many, however laying on your back is linked to sleep apnoea and difficulties breathing. If you find that you’re sleeping restlessly, whilst in this position, try turning over.
If you really want to get the best night’s sleep, a great mattress should be your first point of call. Here at Lion Mattresses, we work hard in order to develop only the best mattresses for our customers. We want everybody to sleep soundly and as such offer our superior mattresses at incredibly competitive rates. Why not check out our range of memory foam mattress and see how much they can improve the quality of your sleep?
]]>There are thousands of mattresses to choose from out there, and picking the perfect one is a difficult task indeed. The first thing you should do when choosing a new mattress is to decide whether you prefer memory foam mattresses or spring mattresses. Making this decision will at least reduce your number of options to an extent.
Here you’ll find a comprehensive comparison of memory foam mattresses vs spring mattresses, which will hopefully help to make a difficult decision much easier.
The creation of the very first spring mattress dates back to 1871. German born Heinrich Westphal is the man credited with inventing it. Sadly, Heinrich died posthumously, he never profited from his creation and is said to have met his end due to crippling poverty. That’s right, the man who invented something which countless numbers of people have slept on for generations, died from being too poor. Where’s the justice in that? In fact, it wasn’t until the mid-1930’s that spring mattresses became widely recognised and used by many.
Memory foam was originally created in 1966, by NASA’s Ames Research Center as a means to improve the safety of aircraft cushions. However, it wasn’t until the early 1980’s, that NASA released the use of memory foam to the public. At this point in time, the manufacturing of memory foam was extremely difficult, purely due to how new and unknown it was. Memory foam mattresses didn’t really catch on until the mid-90’s and were first used to treat patients in need of prolonged bed rest. Soon after, memory foam became much cheaper and easier to produce. Many companies, including ourselves, worked with memory foam in their products in order to further refine them and improve the overall quality. Today, more and more people are choosing to sleep on memory foam as opposed to conventional spring mattresses.
If you’re a traditionalist, you may find it difficult to make the transition from a spring mattress to a memory foam mattress. Generally speaking, most people don’t transition from a memory foam mattress to a spring mattress, at least from our understanding. If you’re still sitting on the fence however and aren’t sure which mattress is best for you, it’s important to understand how each weighs up in regards to 3 key factors; comfort, support, and durability.
Memory foam mattresses contour to an individual’s unique shape. This highly advanced material reacts to a person’s body temperature and molds around applied pressure as it heats up. It cradles you as you sleep and minimises restlessness through tossing and turning. This is not only good news for you but also your partner. If you both share a bed together, it has shown to lessen levels of disturbance.
Spring Mattresses, on the other hand, do not allow for this level of comfort. You’ll instead sleep on top of the mattresses as opposed to “within” in. Some users may prefer this notion, however, when it comes to levels of support, a memory foam mattress is best.
Memory foam contours to a person’s unique shape and as such allows for evenly distributed pressure relief. Spring mattresses, however, rely on coils to push back against the body, which as a result provides uneven support. This is due to the fact that differing areas of the body create various levels of pressure whilst you sleep.
A memory foam mattress is much more durable when compared to a spring mattress with cheap quality padding. Memory foam mattresses, although soft are still firm enough to withstand the applied force of a person’s body weight. When combined with additional materials, a memory foam mattress proves to be even more durable than before.
Sold yet? Willing to make the transition to memory foam, alongside millions of other people. If so, be sure to check out our fantastic range of memory foam mattresses. Treat yourself to a great night’s sleep.
]]>Who’s the one snoring at night in your relationship? It’s a long debated question, do men snore more than women? Here at Lion Mattresses, we’re all about everything sleep related. If that means that we have to settle this war of the sexes, then we’re prepared to do so. Stay wide awake for this one readers, we’re about to uncover the truth. Who’s snoring at night more? Men or Women?
We all know what snoring is, but do you really know why people do it? Scientifically speaking, snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures, caused by an escape of air whilst sleeping. In layman’s terms, it’s an irritating noise people make when they sleep, a noise that at one time or another we’re likely all guilt of making. Snoring at night can range in pitch and volume. Sometimes when a person snores, it can sound like a bit of air slowly escaping from the pinched end of a latex balloon. Other times however, it can sound like a jumbo jet is trying to take off in your very bedroom. Either way, snoring at night can be a distraction and can stop people from getting a good night’s sleep.
There’s plenty of contributing factors which can lead to an increase of snoring at night. This includes a person’s weight, whether they’re a smoker, being ill, or having one too many glasses of wine.
When we drift into a deep sleep, our throat muscles relax. This causes our airways to become more narrow. This occurs with everyone, whether you regularly snore or not. If you find that you’re a deep sleeper however, the roof of your mouth, your uvula, the base of your tongue or your nasal passages may relax too much. As such, your airways will become partially blocked, thus causing a snoring sound when breathing.
Sorry guys, but statistics show that approximately 40% of adult men are snorers. This when compared to only 24% of adult women snorers, does suggest that it is in fact men that are snoring at night more often.
Studies show that a third of adult men are known to be snorers, in comparison only a fifth of adult women are known to be snoring at night. But why do men snore more than women? It’s mostly due to biology. The male voice box sits lower than a woman’s does, as such there is a larger airway space left open. When a man’s tongue relaxes, it will only partially block their airways, thus causing them to snore. Most women however having generally smaller throats, will find that their tongues when relaxed completely block their airways. Generally if you stop breathing due to this, your body will naturally wake up. The body once again becomes alert and thus snoring is much less likely to occur.
This does however suggest that men are generally sleeping better than women are. Firstly men are not being kept up as much by the incessant sound of snoring at night. Men are also not waking up during the night due to fully blocked airways.
Women, we can’t offer you a magic snoring cure, however we can offer you a better quality of sleep. Take a look at our range of memory foam mattresses and accessories, all designed to help you sleep easier.
]]>It's always the same, isn't it? We pray for Summer to come around, and when it finally does, we complain about how warm it is! Recent polls suggest that although many of us enjoy hot weather, over half of us in fact do not!
It's estimated that nearly a third of us actually prefer cold temperatures, the colder the better. If there's one thing that we can agree on though, it's that nobody likes to be too hot whilst they sleep. Suffering from the nighttime sweats? Too hot to sleep? Here's a few handy tips that will keep you cool at night.
Ice is natures remedy for hot weather. Being the polar opposite of fire certainly has it's advantages when it comes to cooling down.
Or any other drink for that matter. Of course, water is the best to keep you hydrated throughout the night. OK this may be quite obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people neglect their body's need for hydration. Ice cold water when drunk, will help reduce your body's core temperature. It also helps to promote sweating. As nasty as that sounds, perspiration is the body's natural way of cooling down.
Not for too long though, you don't want to be sleeping with frost burn. Placing your sheets in the freezer for a couple of minutes however will help them stay nice and cool.
This one's been popular for a long time. It essentially involves placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan. As the cold air rises from the bowl, the fan will push the air around the room.
We all know about hot water bottles, but have you tried a cold one? Simply fill with water and place it in the freezer a while before bed.
We don't mean that you need to pursue a Masters in Computer Science, in order to build a cooling robot. Understanding how technology and appliances keep you warm though, will help you to stay cool.
Even if you're scared of the dark! You're going to have to decide what's worse, your phobia or being too hot to sleep. It's up to you, however lightbulbs generate a lot of heat which will naturally increase your room's temperature.
Just remember to charge your phone earlier. Keeping plugs out of sockets at night not only saves energy, but will also keep you cooler.
Try making a refreshing salad instead. Ovens are notorious for raising the temperature of the entire house. Staying away from the oven will help to keep your house cool and ultimately, you cool.
The Best Mattress from Lion Mattresses is not only luxuriously comfortable, it also works to keep you cool at night. Remember when we said earlier that sweating is the body's natural way of keeping you cool? What we didn't mention, is that laying on a damp mattress will ultimately only make you warmer! That's exactly why our Best Mattress comes fitted with a breathable sleep surface cover. If you're really too hot to sleep, the Best Mattress is a must!
]]>The history of mattresses is a long one indeed. In fact, the very first mattress dates back as far as 77,000 years ago! Referred to as sleeping mats, they were discovered in a South African cave. These early mattresses, weaved from special evergreens helped to repel mosquitoes. Analysis also indicated that owners regularly refurbish their beds. This helped to keep them in optimum condition. Clearly early people valued the quality of what they slept on. We as humans still maintain this trait today.
Early sleeping mats provided much more than a place to rest. In fact, researchers believe that early man conducted many activities on them. True many of us still enjoy spending most of our waking moments in bed. Can we be blamed with cosy mattresses such as The Best Mattress available to purchase? It's fair to say that a mattress crafted from plants 77,000 years ago was likely nowhere near the comfort we're used to. With this said however, it does gives us a clear indication that our ancestors loved resting. They did whatever they could to get the best night's sleep possible; some habits never change.
The word mattress derives from the Arabic word "matrah" meaning to throw or place something down. Europeans first began to adopt the Arabic way of sleeping on floor placed cushions during the Crusades. Eventually, Europeans coined their own term for the "matrah". The word Europeans used was "materas", hence where the modern day name "mattress" comes from.
As the history of mattresses progressed, they began to increase in popularity within consumer culture. Early manufactured mattresses contained natural products such as hay, feathers or even horse hair. Lion Mattresses can wholeheartedly assure you that you've not missed out on these. Sleeping on a mattress filled with straw would be torturous in comparison to sleeping on a memory foam mattress.
Around the first half of the 20th century, manufacturers began to fill mattresses with cotton batting or polyester. Just in time for the turn of the century, a man named James Marshall first introduced the individually wrapped pocketed spring coil mattress. The idea was to provide a mattress which provided both support and comfort via the use of independent, internal springs.
In 1966, memory foam was invented. This was contracted by NASA's Ames Research Centre in an effort to improve the safety of aircraft cushions. It was not long however until manufacturers began using this revolutionary material to improve comfort in mattresses. Memory foam is special due to the way in which it moulds to the unique shape of applied pressure. This works to essentially cradle your body whilst you sleep.
At Lion Mattresses, we continue to use memory foam in every quality mattresses that we make. We consistently work to improve the overall quality that memory foam provides by adopting the latest innovations in foam technology.
If the history of mattresses has taught us anything, it's that a great idea can always be improved upon. We've come so far as a species, from resting on evergreen sleeping mats to attaining maximum comfort with memory foam. Why not improve the quality of your sleep today with a superior memory foam mattress from Lion Mattresses?
]]>The correct pillow will not only be extremely comfortable, it will actively work to support your head, neck, shoulders and spine. This in turn will help to reduce or dissipate any aches or pains associated with poor quality sleep. If you're not getting the quality of sleep you deserve, consider switching to memory foam pillows for an all round improved experience.
Memory foam in mattresses are well known for their comfortable properties. It's exactly why we at Lion Mattresses hand craft all of our superior mattresses from the stuff. It should come as no surprise then that memory foam pillows are also extremely comfortable and supportive for sleepers. But why is this you ask? Let's investigate.
Memory foam pillows help keep your spine aligned whilst sleeping. This is due to the fact that they do not allow your neck to bend in the night. Instead, quality memory foam pillows cradle your unique shape and provide support all night long.
Just like the way in which memory foam mattresses mould to the unique shape of your body, memory foam pillows mould to the shape of your head. This feels as good as it sounds. Imagine sinking softly into your pillow, only to be cradle by luxurious foam throughout the night.
Another great trait of memory foam pillows is that they never require adjustment. Memory foam always returns to its original shape after a short period of time. This means that you don’t need to constantly flip or fluff them. Not having to constantly attend to your pillows is bound to improve your sleep quality.
You may not believe this, but memory foam pillows are even known to reduce snoring. If you or your partner have a problem with snoring, then a memory foam pillow could be the answer. The problem with standard pillows is that they tend to tilt your head upwards. This in turn restricts your airways. Memory foam pillows on the other hand contour around your head and neck, thus improving your airway flow. An improved airflow means that you're much less likely to snore whilst sleeping.
We specialise in memory foam here at Lion Mattresses. We've not only created a quality range of memory foam mattresses, we've also created some brilliant memory foam pillows to compliment them. Our Dreamer – Ultimate Memory Foam Pillow delivers where you need it to, and is specifically designed to improve the quality of your sleep.
It's 100% breathable, hypoallergenic and comes fitted with a cool to the touch, temperature sensitive, machine washable cover. Not only will the memory foam in this pillow help to support your neck throughout the night, it'll also actively work to keep you cool. Being too hot is a predominant reason for poor quality sleep. That's why we at Lion Mattresses have taken this into account with our temperature sensitive cover.
If you want to sleep better at night, a memory foam pillow from Lion Mattresses is what you need.
]]>European size mattresses are generally slightly bigger than their UK counterpart. For that little extra room to roll about in, European size mattresses are ideal. But why are they bigger? Why can't all mattresses sizes be the same size? Before you get too confused, allow us to explain why.
It's mostly due the size of the bed frame which each country produces. Naturally a mattress needs to fit it's bed frame. European size mattresses for example will be made to measure the size of a European bed frame. In fact, many countries have mattress sizes unique to them. Everybody likes to be different and there's no exception when it comes to sleeping.
Mattresses sold in the UK and Ireland for example are mostly constructed using metric dimensions. The UK and Ireland has four main mattress sizes; namely single, double, king and super king. Small single (cot sizes) and small doubles are also recognised, however these are much less common. The UK and Ireland are also the only region to not recognise the Queen size mattress as a standard size. Only by shopping for European size mattresses will you be able to source a mattress for a Queen sized bed. For reference, European size mattresses for Queen sized beds measure 160cm x 200cm (63" x 79").
A standard double sized mattress in the UK and Ireland measures in at 135cm x 190cm (53" x 75"). In continental Europe however a standard double sized mattress will measure in at 140cm x 200cm (55" x 79"). This may not seem like a lot, but a mattress that is too big or too small for your bed frame could potentially cause negative effects for the quality of your sleep.
Due to the increasing popularity of European furniture retailers such as IKEA within the United Kingdom, you may want to consider European Size Mattresses. It's now easier than ever to source bed frames that are slightly bigger than their UK counterpart. These are ideal for those searching for slightly more room to sleep. It's also great for those that are already accustomed to European size mattresses and wish to continue sleeping this way in the UK.
Here at Lion Mattresses, we recognise the ever increasing demand for European size mattresses in the United Kingdom. Our aim is to ensure that our customers are able to purchase the mattresses size they wish, whatever they may be accustomed to. That's exactly why our Classic Lion Memory Foam Mattress is available in a full range of European size mattress sizes for our customers here in the United Kingdom.
We can achieve this due to the fact that all of our mattresses are handmade at our factory in Buckinghamshire. Through a combination of only the finest materials alongside an extensive selection of mattress sizes to choose from; the best nights sleep is merely a few clicks away with Lion Mattresses.

]]>A cheap memory foam mattress may reflect its level of quality in its price. This is especially the case for popular mattress retailers. Retailers rely on mattress manufacturers to create their products. Naturally both retailers and manufacturers must make a profit on what they sell. But how can a company that also pays a manufacturer for their products afford to heavily discount memory foam mattresses? The answer is likely that the memory foam mattresses they sell are of poor quality. Cheap materials mean cheaper outlay for retailers. In turn, this means that they can afford to discount that mattress you’ve got your eyes set upon.
Lion Mattresses is proudly both the manufacturer and retailer of quality memory foam mattresses. This means that we can offer our products to consumers at a discounted rate, without sacrificing product quality.
When purchasing a memory foam mattress, there’s a number of things you should look out for. The following will help you determine whether you’re looking at a cheap memory foam mattress or a quality one.
Our memory foam mattresses may be inexpensive, but they’re still of superior quality. A cheap memory foam mattress from most retailers may not cost the earth, but it’s likely to let you down. With Lion Mattresses, you can rest assured by our products quality. A cheap memory foam mattress is likely to contain inferior materials that harm the environment. All of our memory foam mattresses however use superior, eco-friendly materials. This means that you can rest both easy and guilt free.

]]>Memory foam is designed to give maximum support to those who lay on it. It moulds around the body and evenly distributes weight, thus relieving stress on susceptible pressure areas. The foam reacts to both heat and pressure, then moulds to your unique shape. When pressure is relieved, it returns to its original shape. You may have been sleeping like a rock all night, but you’d never tell from the shape of your mattress.
Unlike traditional mattresses, memory foam does not contain springs. The problem with spring built mattresses is that they are incapable of evenly supporting your body weight. To do so correctly, they would need to contain numerous springs in small, evenly distributed pockets. Not only would this make spring mattresses extremely expensive, it would also make them excessively heavy. Memory foam is a much greater solution. It provides an even surface throughout and is capable of supporting all areas of your body. This greatly reduces the risk of aches, including in both the neck and back. It’s also great for alleviating the painful symptoms of arthritis.
There are plenty of ways to get an exceptional night’s sleep. We’ve got a few tips and tricks to share with you here at Lion Mattresses. It goes without saying however; you should always use a memory foam mattress with these methods for the best effect.
Melatonin occurs naturally in the body, and is controlled naturally through light exposure. It’s essentially the hormone that helps control your body clock. When it’s dark you secrete more melatonin than during the day, this makes you sleepy. In order to balance your body’s melatonin levels, expose yourself to as much natural light as possible during the day. At night try to avoid unnatural lighting from things such as phones, televisions and mounted lights.
Running a warm bath before you go to bed will help regulate your body’s temperature. A warm bath helps bring your body’s temperature to an ideal level for sleeping. Not only this, but it’s a great way to relax before going to bed. Lion Mattresses also recommend relaxation oils and scented candles. These are perfect for unwinding after a hard day’s work.
If your room is hot, you will be to. Being too hot will drastically affect your ability to sleep. An ideal room temperature for sleeping is said to be 18.5 degrees. If you’re still feeling too warm, try sleeping with your feet out of the covers. Feet contain special blood vessels called arteriovenous anastomoses which are ideal for alleviating body heat.
A memory foam mattress from Lion Mattresses will drastically improve the quality of your sleep when coupled with these techniques. For further information on our quality and extensive range of mattresses, be sure to visit our Memory Foam Mattresses page.
